Site Redesign feedback wanted

1. Should I redesign this site, or keep the dark background with the orange text?

2. Do you prefer dark background sites or light background sites?

3. How would you suggest a person like myself do such a thing? While I am dashingly handsome, clever, and highly intellegent, I lack basic design skills and generally have trouble matching socks in the morning?

(note: this article floats and will remain near the top until I deem otherwise.)

Update: Larry Simon of Amish Tech Support has completely redesigned his site, making me insanely jealous. Perhaps some professional web design is in order for the Universe.

Red text on a black background is the most difficult to read. I'm not finding orange much better.

Me? I'd prefer a off-white background (like a cream color), which reduces glare, with a deep-red or black text set in a sans-serif font like Tahoma. I find serif fonts like Times hard to get through on a screen, though they look much better on a page.

Just one man's opinion.

Hi!

I don't think you're in dire need of a redesign, because your blog looks pretty good.

But, I definitely prefer a white background. I just took two web design courses at school and that was one of the top ten design principles (very high contrast). What you have is NOT bad, but I think white would be easier, especially for people with any kind of vision problems.

On the other hand, your site is different and I like that. Everybody has white backgrounds and they get kind of indistinguishable.

Anyway, as for making the change, it is very very easy to do. It looks like you know how to tweak your HTML code in MovableType because you do have these custom colors. Right? If not, just e-mail me and I'll tell you! :)

Good luck!

Its not the procedure I have trouble with, it's the creative work. I'm the kind of guy that wears a green shirt with blue shorts. I can look at something and see that I like it, but I cannot look at a blank slate and produce something that I like. I think its a whole left brain-right brain synchronization kind of thing.

I prefer the dark background with light type. I think it's easier on the eyes. And since I do a lot of browsing from my desk at work, it's harder for others to pick up, I think. Seriously, though, I do like it as it, both from a reading standpoint, and a design standpoint.

That's, "I do like it as is."

Content Rules!!! Doesn't matter much to me what it looks like. My home page is lewrockwell.com, design-wise it's boooorrrrrring. But killer content keeps me coming back.
