There is a lot of discussion about Johnie Cochran's proposal to 'reward' NFL teams with extra draft picks for hiring black coaches, whom Cochran says are better coaches any way.
However, most analysis of the situation seems to miss the obvious advantages that any coach would have with an extra draft pick. The extra pick given to black coaches would give those teams a distinct advantage. This may be enough to make the coach appear better than he is, thus fulfilling Cochran's prophecy.
Something I agree with. Suprising but still I would call for an end to football on college campuses and on all non-spots channels. Who needs it, did the Romans need galdiators? Why do we need dudes running into each other chasing after a ball in battle positions. And by the way no matter what you think football is homo-erotic. Thats why there are so many closeted gay football players.
Posted by: E-Nuf at October 3, 2002 5:05 PMThat is quite extreme. First, there is a lot of money in football. The money gained from football and basketball programs goes to fund other, 'less popular', sports like baseball and soccer.
Second, athletic scholarships provide a great opportunity for a lot of kids who ordinarily would be ineligible or unable, to go to college.
Third, in a society that is increasingly overweight, cutting athletics seems very foolish.
As for a question of need, there are a lot of things we don't necessarily need. That doesn't mean we should take away people's rights to enjoy them.
