'Tis the season for trick or treating for Unicef. Unicef collects millions of dollars from the US, and uses it to give aid to children across the world.
What many people don't realize is that the aid comes in the name of the UN, not the US. After all, UNICEF is the United Nations Children's Fund. That is the very UN that criticizes the US at every turn. Libertarian demigod, Neal Boortz points out that the UN actively supports the following positions:
The sad thing is that even when the US does give charitable aid, it is either ignored or misrepresented. Remember the $43 million we gave to Afghanistan in May 2001 for famine relief? All of it went through the UN World Food Program and independent aid groups, yet after September 11th, vritually all major news sources reported that 100% of the money had gone to the Taliban.
That's one thing I've never been able to let go of. While I can see some foreign aid as a nice and noble thing, I just want to say "to hell with it, the rest of the world can die in pain and suffering" when I see Judy Mann at the Washington Post lying about the recipients of American foreign aid to make a popular, albeit wrong, jab at the Bush Administration.
In short, if foreign aid only makes us look BAD, what's the point of it?
