Our "Drug Mart" store had to have a ballot referendum to have permission to sell wine on Sunday. I presumed the measure would pass because you could simply cross the street and buy wine at several other places that sell wine on Sunday.
Here is how you know you live in a small town. The measure failed with 66 Yes votes vs. 80 No votes. Granted this is only 1 precinct in my 'city' of about 5000, but it is still quite a difference from when I lived in Atlanta. (Of course beer and wine sales were banned state-wide in Georgia..)
The Effingham County referendum to allow liquor sales here failed by a 3 to 1 margin. I am not surprised, because the Baptists were out at the polling places yesterday, mau-mauing and waving signs about this issue. One overly-zealous temeperance advocate was arrested for doing his nitwit thing too close to the polls.
So, I will continue to buy my liquor in Chatham County on the way home from work and allow THOSE citizens to spend my tax dollars. It's enough to drive a man to drink....
Posted by: Acidman at November 6, 2002 6:50 PMJust as long as that man is driving drunk. Now, it's not like you have to go too far to buy liquor, Acidman. I've been to the Crackerbox. And, I could find my way to a liquor store from there in less than 20 minutes.
Posted by: Da Goddess at November 6, 2002 11:56 PMSad thing is, that the Sabbath (holy day) is actually on Saturday. Lets see them try to get that passed.
Posted by: Ravenwood at November 7, 2002 8:43 AMAh, to live in a free state, where alcohol flows all night long. You can even drink for free here....okay, you have to be gambling to do it, and there's a good chance you'll lose money doing so, but that's beside the point.
Growing up in So Cal, I got used to seeing booze in all the grocery stores. When I moved to Denver, it was quite a shock to see all but cooking wine and 3.2 beer sold only at county-run liquor outlets. And not being able to run out for margarita fixings right before the football games started on Sundays was hell!
Now I'm in Nevada, where you can not only buy booze at the grocery store, you can also put your change into slot machines :) Not that I play slots, mind you...I just program them.
I've never understood the weird alcohol rules that infest what seems like every state east of the Rockies.
