FOX News reports that a California school district is doing away with valedictorians.
"If they are not number one, it could get their feelings hurt if they are self-motivating and high-achieving students," said Principal Bill Black.Pretty soon they won't even grade papers anymore. If kids cannot handle being beaten out for valedictorian, they are in for a rude awakening when the get to college. The private sector work place is going to be even more shocking. So much for preparing our kids to face life.
"it could get their feelings hurt"...sounds like the principal needs to go back to school. He should have phrased it, "They could have their feelings hurt"
Of course, this is just bullshit. I mean, what's the valedictorian of his school's IQ, anyway? 67? I mean, really!
Posted by: Da Goddess at February 24, 2003 3:58 PMFirst of all, how does someone get a GPA of 4.6 - when 4.0 is perfect? Kind of like giving 110% (impossible).
Second, the reason some are worried about abolishing the the valedictorian is that it might set a precident for abolishing the homecoming queen? Oh, that's really important!
Third - who cares if there are hurt feelings? Better get used to it kiddos!
Posted by: bogie at February 25, 2003 6:45 AMMost schools give extra points for AP courses. (a/k/a college credit courses taken during high school).
0.6 sounds like a lot to me, but it really does vary by school system. My home-town school system gave such a miniscule amount, that it really didn't matter how many AP courses you took. If I remember right, my A in AP Chemistry was worth 4.02 points instead of 4.0. Once you average that in with the rest of your classes, your bonus pretty much disappears.
Posted by: Ravenwood at February 25, 2003 10:30 AMWell, this just displays the liberal hippyness of the freaking wackos in California.. The Karatie kid needs to pay that guy a visit and give him a Judo Chop! Ok, I don't really know what that means.. Just the karatie kid moved to california, and the school -- in california -- and um.. ok, im gonna go now..
