Actor and coke-head Robin Williams, known for his role as Popeye, is the latest celebrity to step up to the bully pulpit, and stick his foot in his mouth.
"America is broke, basically, but Bush wants to wage a war that costs pretty much a billion dollars a month," said Williams.Williams is not only cliche about the cost of the war, but he sticks a Bush is stupid joke in there too (a racist one at that). Frankly I'm a bit tired of Hollywood actors whose principle secondary education consists of some acting classes, calling Bush stupid. (Also, if I were going to make fun of someone's grammar, I certainly wouldn't say 'He's like', or 'She goes'.) The man may not be as eloquent as Bill Clinton, (who sounded great, but you couldn't believe a word he said) but he does have two Ivy League degrees, and has managed a few major businesses, oh and he was Governor of Texas. That isn't something to be taken lightly, and probably requires more brain power than sitting upside down on a couch and pretending you're an alien.
"We have a president for whom English is a second language. He's like 'We have to get rid of dictators,' but he's pretty much one himself."
There is also the matter of implying people that speak English as a second language are stupid. I find the implication offensive, and so should the over 5 Billion people that don't speak English as their primary language.
I had previously praised Williams for his support of the troops and the USO. I take it all back.

Sure Bush is about as honest as his father.
I quote Bush Sr., "READ MY LIPS. NO MORE TAXES."
If you strain your small brain, you might remember that he did raise taxes.
Posted by: Michelle at April 1, 2003 10:27 PMOh well, George H.W. Bush (not a Sr.) raised taxes when he said he wouldn't. That sure convinces me that his son must be an idiot. Why don't you try coming up with some hard core evidence next time.
Also, quit with the name calling. It doesn't bolster your argument, and in my opinion, makes you sound petty.
Posted by: Ravenwood at April 3, 2003 6:18 PMI am given some pause when I hear right-wingers claim that Dubya may not be too bright, but he's backed up by a strong administration. I'm AMAZED when they actually claim Dubya is clever. Have you ever watched him field reporters' questions? The man can't even respond to questions that his administration has had him rehearsing for.
And I think you sort of missed the irony with the 'second language' remark. Allow me to spell it out: if one's ONLY language appears foreign to the speaker, he is illiterate.
Posted by: Miles at April 3, 2003 10:23 PMCritics are putting too much emphasis on the delivery, and not enough on the content. While the ability to convey ideas with words is important, it is not more important than the idea itself. By that rationale, a person who stutters, or a person who cannot speak at all (like Stephen Hawking) is considered a moron.
Posted by: Ravenwood at April 3, 2003 10:33 PMI think you're all arguing a point that's been conceeded.
Bush isn't the brightest President (and far from my favorite, by the way.....) we've ever had, but he's FAR from stupid. No, he can't EVEN speak in public, but so what... he's doing a pretty decent job with "things" considering Billary left him this mess.....
Besides, he beats the hell outta PlasticMan who was running against him!
Posted by: Jim S at April 4, 2003 2:07 PMa person's dialect/accent/yadayadayada is no basis for determining intelligence. that's like saying all animals are brainless sacks of meat because they can't speak a word of any human language. try catching a cat to take it to the vet; damn things are too smart sometimes.
