The Salem homeowner who fatally shot an intruder/arsonist in Salem, Oregon will not face charges. A grand jury found that the use of deadly physical force was justified under Oregon law.
It's nice to see that justice was done. I only wish the same could be said for Ronald Dixon, who at last update is still facing firearm's possession charges in New York for saving his infant son from an intruder.

Good.
Posted by: Geoffrey at April 30, 2003 5:40 PMI remember being advised once that if I was going to shoot an intruder, I needed to do it so he fell in through the door so I wouldn't get charged with murder. I've since decided that if it happens, I'll let my dog chew the body to pieces before calling the police. Just to be safe.

Posted by: Ravenwood at May 1, 2003 9:44 AMThe way I look at it is this: human beings have free will. The potential burglar/arsonist has the choice whether or not to enter another citizen's property. The property owner just wants to be left alone to enjoy his/her property in peace. If the said burglar/arsonist makes the choice to enter the property owners domain with criminal intent then said burglar/arsonist deserves whatever he/she gets from aforementioned property owner.
"But surely" some might say "it is the job of the police to apprehend offenders". Yeah right! A neighbour of mine was burgled recently and another female neighbour who obviously did not want to tackle the offender called the police as the crime was taking place. It took the USELESS New South Wales police a full hour and a half to respond by which time it was fairly obvious even to the stupid copper that the offender was long gone.
I catch anyone on my property and at the very least my baseball bat is going to get a workout.
I agree wholeheartedly. Ninety-five percent of the time, police arrive too late. They merely file a report and investigate.
You can bet your sweet bippy that if an intruder enters my home, I'm going to defend it. And it won't be with a baseball bat either.
