Since taking office, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has not been winning any popularity contests. Not satisfied with raising taxes on literally everything, banning smoking, and offering up numerous other unwelcome gifts to the citizens on New York, Mayor Bloomberg is now telling officers to ticket citizens for anything and everything they can. Bloomberg has unleashed zero tolerance on New Yorkers, apparently as part of a city wide grab for cash.
The New York Daily News reports that last week's ticketing of a person for illegally sitting on a milk crate are not uncommon in Bloomberg's New York.
That black license plate frame that came with your car? Illegal. $55 fine. So, who is to blame? Well the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association alleges that Bloomberg and city officials are holding officers to a strict quota of tickets.Taking up two seats on a train? $50.
Feeding pigeons in the park? Another $50...
Cops in Brooklyn South, for instance, have been told to write summonses to wayward bicyclists for infractions such as coasting with their feet off the pedals or for riding bicycles without bells....Ahh, what a wonderful little utopia Bloomberg has created. A place where citizens are likely to be fined for walking with their shirts untucked. Despite the outcry, Bloomberg remains defiant. He claims, that the police are simply doing their jobs, and that New Yorkers should start obeying the laws, and 'suck it up' if they get a ticket. Naturally, ignorance of the law is no excuse.Alexander Ortiz was ticketed for improperly bundling newspapers to be recycled...

seems to me Bloomberg isn't the one REALLY responsible here... yes, he's grabbing cash to offset the liquidity problem... yes, he's quota-ing the cops, so he's at fault for exploiting the liberal agenda to control lives.
Seems to me, NYC has a SERIOUS over-legislation problem. They've legislated where and on what you can sit, what license plate holder you have to use (even though the dealers who installed the plate should be the ones held accountable, I'd say), whether or not you can interact with the wildlife, whether or not you can choose to smoke, how to ride your bike...... hmmmm.... blame Bloomberg all you want (I think he's a gratitous fucktard, too but that's not the point), but I think the moronic legislature that passed all these stupid laws and hasn't repealed them is to blame.
Nazi Bloomberg is just exploiting the people's willingness to let the legislature make those stupid laws.

There should be some common sense involved, so that the guy that was ticketed for blocking his own driveway doesn't have to go to court to fight his battle.

Posted by: Rick Bellefleur at May 29, 2003 10:22 AMAnd with news like this coming over the atlantic to Europe, do you still wonder why over here a lot of people strongly believe that US-citizens have some serious mental problems?
As I have said repeatedly: Build a high wall round the US. Let nobody in and, for god's sake, let nobody OUT!
I roughly 100 years we may have a look to see if anybody survived the Unlimited Stupidity of America.
Posted by: Peter at May 31, 2003 1:19 PMHi,
I am a german student and i need information about the "zero tolerance" policing in New York City. Is there still a "Zero Tolerance" policy in the year 2003? It´s hard to gain information about this issue in germany. I am very thankful for information about the current situation in New York City.
Thanks a lot, Oliver
