Kim du Toit goes on another tirade against the 9mm. I don't own a 9mm pistol, and probably never will. The only 9mm I would consider buying would be a machine pistol like an UZI. If you're going to crank out 750 rpm, it helps to have a cheap ammo supply. That is one reason I buy cheap commie rifles like the SKS. It's a straight shooter, costs about $120, and shoots for 7.5 cents a round.
Kim duly notes that servicemen were only loading 10 rounds into their mags to solve a feed problem with the weak spring.
Ummmm and I thought the M9's big advantage over the 1911 was magazine capacity? Strikes me that a Beretta carrying 10 rounds is not much better than a Colt 1911 carrying 8 rounds -- and 10-round mags for the 1911 are readily available.I like my .45 ACP Taurus, although I haven't shot it very much. I wonder what Kim thinks about the .40S&W? I've owned a few .40 Glocks that seem like they could take some abuse. I know Kim hates Glocks, but I'm sure they could find a more suitable side arm. To me, the .40S&W cartridge seems like a nice compromise. Then again, with compromise often times nobody is happy.
I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I am is willing to chime in on the subject. I'm also sure that there are plenty of .40 caliber haters out there. In my opinion, however, it's much better than an under powered 9mm.
I concur. I love my Kimber .45, but I will be getting a .40 in the future. I had a nice Springfield CZ clone in .40, but it didn't have a beavertail, and the hammer drew blood after the second or third round. OUCH!
I really believe that the .40 offers the best compromise between bore size and magazine capacity, and it's distinctly better than the 9mm if you compare hardball to hardball. I'd much rather have a .40 FMJ truncated cone round than a standard 9mm ball round. (If limited to FMJ the .45 is still a better choice, round for round, but I can HANDLE a 10+ round .40 pistol. It doesn't feel like holding a 2x4.)
Posted by: Kevin Baker at June 13, 2003 11:45 AMI own a Ruger P-85 9mm and a Ruger P-90 .45 cal and I like both guns. They're a bit heavy, bulky and not practical for CC but I keep the .45 ready for home defense and the 9mm stays in my glove box. I bought the P-85 when you could still put 12 rounds in the clip and one in the chamber. Some people don't like the 9mm, but I sure wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a few hydra-shock rounds from my P-85. I hope I never need to use it, but I have 13 nasty rounds ready and an extra clip handy if I ever need to defend myself against a carjacker or mugger. Count me as one who likes the 9mm.
Posted by: Brent at June 16, 2003 3:22 PMMy Glock 27 shoots .40 S&W, and came with two 9 round magazines. It is the perfect size for concealed carry, and with a few +1 add ons, I can turn the 9 round mags into 10 round mags, and not add any size to the profile of the firearm.
