Ravenwood's Musings

iconWhile I have nothing against HBO's film crews getting kicked out of the Capitol building, I find the reasoning to be down right laughable. Trent Lott, as chairman of the Senate Rules Committee and Ethics Committee claims that Senate rules "strictly prohibit the use of Capitol and Senate space for any commercial or profit-making purpose".

  • Should tax dollars be used for taking a census of the ocean? CNN reports that the census will take 10 years and cost $1 Billion. It will be paid for by both private contributors and "governments". They also report that "It's a staggering budget. But it's a fraction of the $55 billion seafood trade or what it costs to clean up a major oil spill." I never thought of the seafood industry as a "cost", and oil spill cleanups are certainly not planned expenses.

  • Reuters reports that a man was ordered to share his pension with his ex-wife, even after she remarried. Now that she's died, the German government is forcing him to continue making payments to his ex-wife's husband.

  • The California legislature has approved a 'living wage' of $10 per hour for just about every business in the state. If Davis signs the bill into law, which he probably will do to try to save his job, look for some businesses to contract or pull out of California. Plus there is the tendency of minimum wage floors to put low wage earners out of work, as workers with higher skill sets suddenly find the jobs more appealing because of the increased pay rate.

Don't get spooked, but this "lefty" agrees with you regarding Davis and Calf, and strangely enough, many other things. `Funny thing, Davis is being recalled largely because he does what the majority wants, which, along with the floundering U.S. economy, is very bad for business.
But due to our in the tank National economy nearly every state is in trouble. If that recall thing works in Calf it may create a monster as other states follow suit.
I'm no friend of Davis, but I'm against this not so well thought out Calf recall and what it could lead.
