Don't remember no age limit for cigs - but remember when it was 16.
Still have my typewriter. Not sure why - nastalgia maybe?
Posted by: bogie at October 1, 2003 7:18 AMNaturally, smoking laws varied by state. When I was a kid growing up in the 1980s, there was no smoking age in Virginia. Being a tobacco state, all I had to do was survive the chagrin of some nanny cashier. There was no statute against selling to a 12 year old, but as with any business they could always refuse to serve you. Most of the time it was a "Is this for your daddy?" reaction.
We finally got a smoking age of 16, when I was about 17 or 18. By the time I was 19 or 20, the fed had stepped in and "encouraged" all states to bump the mandatory age to 18.
Thus, I have always been able to buy cigarettes. (Not that I smoke, or anything.)

What does this mean?
