Proving that no good deed goes unpunished, a school bus driver who found a pistol laying in the road during his route was fired, reports ABC13 News. Rather than leave the gun laying in the street ouside a nearby prison, Erik Danna retrieved the firearm, and turned it over to police. Because he handled it around children, however, he was terminated, as was his father, who also handled the firearm.
"I did what any good citizen would have done. I picked it up. I got it out of a dangerous situation. I kept it from falling into the hands of a prisoner. I kept it from falling into the hands of a child," said Danna. What a wonderful lesson this teaches people.

AAAARGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Kim du Toit at October 8, 2003 6:41 PMAre you upset at the bus driver, or at the school district that fired him?
If the latter, then I can't quite share your outrage about the fired bus driver. You're telling me that this guy saw something suspicious on the side of the road and said to himself, "Hmmm, that looks like it might be a gun. I better send a seven year old to go get it for me"?
He ought to have gotten his but out of the seat and picked it up himself, if he thought it was necessary. Failing that, if he really thought he couldn't get out of the bus for 30 seconds for some reason, he should have called a cop.
I just can't get past the fact that this guy THOUGHT this was a gun, THOUGHT it was dangerous to have it out ther, and then sent a second-grader to fetch it.
As it turns out, the soft-case (it sounds like a gun rug) did contain a gun, and it was loaded. This was a remarkably stupid thing for the driver to do. I think his firing is appropriate.
(Note: the foregoing is premised on this story being true. If I had to guess, I'll bet the guy saw the gun rug on the side of the road, assumed it was empty, and sent a kid to retrieve it from him. I imagine this driver may have had an "Oh Shit!" moment when he realized what he'd found).
