From the dept. of who gives a shit

iconThe AP offers this gripping headline: "Jen and Ben Attend Red Sox-Yankees Game"

Wow. I'm shocked, I say, shocked. Be sure to let us all know how many beers they had, and which one went potty first. That journalistic coup is worthy of a Pulitzer.

Frankly, I am more than a little tired of all the Bennifer "news" stories floating around. I could care less how many times they break up and get back together, or whether or not Ben got a gun permit. People that pay attention to this bullshit need to get a life of their own.

There is no better evidence that major media is all about ratings and profit than the entire entertainment industry. The Tom Brokaw's of the world that sit on their porcelain thrones and claim to be working for the common good rather than chasing the almighty dollar are so full of shit their eyes are brown. Anyone who believes them probably also owns several bridges.

How about several dozen (more?) jornalist covering the Kobe Bryant hearing? Granted, that's slightly more news worthy than "Bennifer", but still. BTW, I caught a glimpse of one of the FOX anchorettes chastising another journalist because he chose not to cover Kobe last week. She assured him at great length that that was news.

Milligiveashits, is the unit you want.

The product of news organizations is not news but audience, which they sell to advertisers. You are their product.

Unfortunately not everybody can stand them; so they go with the segment of the audience they can reliably hold, chiefly women. These women want to know: how does this story relate to me? There's a template for each story. They get and keep this audience, and sell it. It's the soap opera audience, with the same motivation: how like my concerns these are!

That's why you see what you see on the tube, and now unfortunately hear on the radio. There's no escaping it where audience is a product.
