Senator Clinton's racial joke

icon"He ran a gas station down in St. Louis." -- Senator Hillary Clinton, poking fun at Mahatma Ghandi, and stereotyping Indians in general.

Two things: First, if this had been a Republican it would have been hate speech. There would be calls for a resignation and/or loss of any Senate leadership positions (anyone remember Trent Lott?). Second, I wonder if some of the major media will give her a pass on this.

I give her a pass too. It's just a stereotype. The alarming thing is that it's not funny, that is to say it's not particularly true. That shows how out of touch she is.

The subcontinent accent is good material http://rhhardin2.home.mindspring.com/imuscut.pak.ra (147kb) but she presumably can't do dialect, as far as we know at this point.

I hate the cow, but it was (IMHO) just a bad attempt at humor.

If you'll recall, Trent Lott was pulled down by conservatives pissed off at his idiocy. The press didn't really get into it until after the pundits had everyone riled up.
