The labor union, United Mine Workers of America, gave John Kerry a Browning Auto-5 semi-automatic shotgun. The Kerry campaign is hoping that the gift will make gun owners such as myself warm up to their french-looking candidate. So, where's the irony?
Kerry co-sponsored Senate Bill 1431. Under the bill, the Browning Auto-5 would be classified as an "assault weapon" and thus be illegal.
UPDATE: For those of you that are getting bogged down in semantics, S.1431 bans any semi-auto shotgun with a "pistol grip" The text of the bill reads: "(42) PISTOL GRIP- The term `pistol grip' means a grip, a thumbhole stock, or any other characteristic that can function as a grip."
I'd say that's vague enough to cover just about every semi-auto shotgun there is.
Saw the barrel down and saw the but stock off to the pistol grip and you have a VERY nice assault shot gun the Browning
A-5 is perfect for that!.
a little work on the sear and you can make it full auto..........
I think Drudge was wrong here...
The gun in question is a Remington 11-87 with a conventional stock and a 4-round magazine. It would not have been banned under Kerry's bill.
However, let's not forget - Kerry has a 100% anti-gun voting record, as evaluated by both the NRA and the Brady Campaign. His bill would have banned lots of guns, including the M1 carbine and the mini-14.

Posted by: Ralph Gizzip at September 8, 2004 12:13 PMEven if the make and model are incorrect, since the shotgun is semi-automatic, under S.1431 it would still come down to their loose definition of "pistol grip".

I'd say that's a little vague.
