If you lock anything up with one of those little round keys, you might want to reconsider. Apparently some of them can be opened with a Bic pen.
If you lock anything up with one of those flat keys, you might want to consider that the lock can be opened with two paper clips.
Every generation is surprised to find that locks can be picked. They had thought they were hard to open.
Posted by: Ron Hardin at September 28, 2004 6:15 AMThis story was first breaking earlier in the summer among the bike messenger community (I'm a bit of a cyclist, or was before my son was born) after someone posted a video on how to pick a Kryptonite bike lock. The New York Times had a big article on it about 2 or 3 weeks ago.
I guess it was only a matter of time before people realized that if a Bike Lock and be picked, than any circular lock can. I know I've got my eye on the soda machine in our building thats eaten oh so many of my quarters.
Posted by: Countertop at September 28, 2004 8:41 AMIt's a small concern in terms of burglarproofing your gun cabinet - but you've got to face the fact that, if the burglar can't pick the lock on any cabinet you could get into the house without a forklift, it will only take a few minutes for a determined burglar to force his way in.
As for worrying about your kids getting the guns - if they're old enough to carve a Bic pen into a key that works, the rules of gun safety should have been drilled into them long ago. Gun cabinets are for toddlers who haven't learned to follow the rules yet.
