From the "New Coke" marketing team, McDonalds is ditching the golden arches. Well, at least in England, and at least temporarily.
McDonald's is dropping the iconic "Golden Arches" logo from its advertising in Britain for the first time, the company has announced.A big gold question mark? I can hear the "mystery meat" jokes already. The famous symbol will be replaced with a gold question mark in a poster campaign due to begin this week.
The new adverts are part of attempts by McDonald's to ditch its unhealthy "junk food" image and promote alternative products.
I have a theory about the New Coke thing...
I'm not sure that New Coke was ever intended to be a great success, because what they did after the failure seemed too well planned to me. The marketing of New Coke sparked intense feelings of loyalty to the original Coke, and shortly thereafter Coke Original arrived on the scene. Not just Coke, but the Original Coke. The same old stuff, but backed by whipped-up loyalty and more of a classic-looking packaging.
I have no numbers to back me up, which is why this is just a crackpot (crakpipe?) theory, but I wouldn't be surprised to see that Coke had rebounded with a bigger market share than ever after Original Coke reappeared.
The McDonald's question mark? That just sounds like stupidity to me. How on earth does a question mark help them ditch the "junk food" image?
