Spineless GOP lawmakers are piling on Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Senators John McCain, Trent Lott, Chuck Hagel, and Susan Collins have all come out publicly against the Secretary for military shortfalls and lack of equipment. Of course, Rummy has only been there for four years, while the Senators are career politicians and have had a direct role in military appropriations.
That they are being very public about their criticism speaks volumes for their character. Knowing how politics works this could be the beginning of the end for Rumsfeld, should President Bush cave to Republican sacrificial demands.
In my humble opinion, Rummy is a good man and he shouldn't go down for this at the hand of hapless GOP opportunists.
Rummy is a self-absorbed political animal who cares more about his own continued existence than the troops he is charged with equipping, training, and protecting. Unfortunately, he may not be the Secretary of War we want, but he IS the Secretary of War we have.
Posted by: Jack Cluth at December 17, 2004 8:16 AMRummy is independantly wealthy and certainly does not need that job or the power it represents. He is serving his country because he has a heartfelt need to. Instead of only alluding to Clintons incompetency with that "the military you have" remark, I wish he would have come right out and said It was what the military Clintons gave us.
Considering what the last administration left us with I'd say both Rummy and the President are doind a hellava job. If anyone is to blame for the lack of equipment and supplies it is the previous administration and the congressional lackies that went along with it.
In regards to Hagel that low life RINO is and has been positioning himself for a run against Hillary in 08. Hell he even co-hosted (with Bob Kerrey) a dinner for John Kerry in NYC DURING the Republican Convention.
He has been in the legislature since 1996, what has he done to see that the troops are supported what were his votes for the military. If he is so concerned now that the troops don't have what they need, why was he so silent when Slick Willie was in charge?
Hagel is just a self grandizing posturing fool.
