Lost preposition brings charges of racism

iconScott Norvell notes that a missing preposition has landed a news reporter in hot water.

A reporter for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune has been disciplined for using the term "colored officers" in an email to a black officer at the police department in that city, the Star-Tribune reports.

Police reporter David Chanen told editors that he meant to use the term "officers of color" but accidentally used the other phrase instead.

Remember, the term "people of color" means you are sophisticated and compassionate. The term "colored people" means you might as well be wearing a sheet.

The NAACP is ``...colored people.''

My theory is that it's a chain of euphemism. As each substitute takes on the bad associations it then picks up, a new euphemism is necessary. This leaves behind the population that considers themselves respectable each time. Confusion results.

So Walter Williams is demanding to be called black. He's not moving on to a new euphemism, even though he's several euphemisms back, taking the line that the term is respectable if the person is respectable.

You could find respectability in Negro, and many people do. A recollection of strong families and disciplined schoolwork.

Maybe it's NAAPC now.

What happened to the simple, descriptive term "black"?

I find it highly amusing (in an annoying way) when someone refers to, for example, a Hatian (in Haiti) as "African-American" when what they mean is black. This happened a while back in some news report I was reading where the reporter thought the skin color of the Hatian spokesman was relevant to the story.

It's just as ridiculous when they do it to non-African immigrants in the states.

They're black, dammit, just like I'm white. I'm caucasian, but I suppose the descriptive term negroid is just too offensive.

I suggest then that we switch to the non-loaded term "mocha." At least until that becomes offensive to someone.

Well, if none of the other bypassed euphemisms will still fly, there's always.... My word, what I was about to type! And this is a family-friendly blog, isn't it? Bad, naughty, evil Curmudgeon!

In all seriousness, I'm getting pretty pissed off about this. The motivation is as plain as print: to keep white people in a constant state of anxiety about what they might say -- and undeserved guilt and abasement toward those who take offense, even if they had to dredge the deepest trenches of implausible implication to find it.

It has to stop. If necessary, it has to be stopped -- by force. A punch in the nose will usually be sufficient, but for us smaller types, I think it would be best to go heavily armed at all times.

Say, that's what I do already! Nice to be prepared, isn't it?

I actually like the song 'Colored People', its a Christian song about God making variety in the human race. I better be more cautious though. I suppose that if I ever played it in my squad car while on the beat I could get nailed for racism.

Common honky, cracker mistake.
