The cops in Sweetwater Florida are suffering from a budget crisis. So rather than destroy their outdated firearms, they are selling them second hand and using the cash to buy the new ones they need. Naturally the very idea of guns being sold to the public (even sold by cops) has the gun grabbers in a panic.
"When you buy a used gun, it's like buying a used car - you're not going to pay top dollar for it," said John Shanks, director of law enforcement relations at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "These guns are going to go back into the civilian market. They're going to be very inexpensive to buy."This is where the gun control movement takes on racist connotations. (The term "Saturday Night Special" in reference to cheap guns actually comes from a racial epithet.)
Shanks remark shows that the Brady Campaign prefers that guns be priced so high that only the most affluent can afford them. This keeps them out of the hands of the poor and minorities; people who cannot afford private security or armed body guards. Given that the tend to live in high crime areas, they are also perhaps the most in need of cheap firearms.
My Glock model 17 is a factory rebuild of a police trade in, and it is one of the best weapons I have ever bought at a price that was right.

Posted by: Bruce at January 19, 2005 2:56 PMI really wonder why Sweetwater needs to replace their guns. Or why they think they're going to malfunction? Sounds like a lack of maintainence to me. Maybe they could get by with some new barrel bushings and some fresh spring kits (assuming they use semi-auto pistols)? Let's face it, it takes tens of thousands of rounds to wear out a pistol, and most police departments are pretty lax about practice. I smell a hidden agenda here. Are these guys still using revolvers from the '50s and now they want Glocks? Do they want to power up from their current 9mms and get .40 S&Ws? I think there is more to this story than what we're being told.
BTW, some guns sell used for far more than they cost when new. Collector value, rarity, etc.
BTW2, most people who own a few guns will sell one or two eventually. Most people who buy their first gun get a used one. I've heard that something like 65% of all guns sales are for used guns; we're talking more than a million sales per year. A few dozen pieces coming on the market from the Sweetwater PD is not even a drop in the bucket. Silly GFWs.
