In the early 1900s there were roughly 500,000 white tailed deer in America. Today there are 25 to 30 Million of them, and the extreme overpopulation is wreaking havoc on the ecosystem.
Today's high deer population may shape how the country's forests look decades from now. The animals are reducing the number of trees and seedlings and affecting which species will survive, forestry experts say.The deer also caused 1.5 million vehicle crashes in 2003, causing $1.1 Billion in damage."There are no saplings, no underbrush for ground nesting birds," said Richard Parker, regional director of the Genesee State Park Region. "There will be no regeneration of the forest. In 40 to 50 years, as the current forest dies, there will be nothing to replace it."
The deer are "eating anything and everything that's there," he said.
And out of state hunting tags cost 200 or more dollars for one season (in OK and TX)...even if you own the land you will be hunting on.
Posted by: MMW at January 19, 2005 10:40 AMReminds me of the Ron White bit about the guy who complained that cows hurt th environment. "What are you doing about it, Ron?"
"I'm eating the cows. But I'm just one man!"
Posted by: Phelps at January 19, 2005 12:20 PMThe solution to this is simple. The auto insurance agencies should get all the pro-gun bloggers together one day. Not a cold day, either. We bring the guns, nature brings the deer, we fix the problem.
Posted by: Adam Lawson at January 19, 2005 4:07 PMMake all the deer listen to Barbara Boxer for about 13 minutes. That will bore them all to death.
Posted by: Steve Scudder at January 19, 2005 8:20 PMA few years ago in Chesapeake, Virginia I contacted the city's animal control department to complain about the huge number of deer that were devastating gardens and shrubs and had caused numerous car accidents. I asked what they were doing about it.
"Nothing."
I mentioned that other cities had used law enforcement officers to hunt and kill deer.
"No, we won't do anything like that."
So the only thing that's going to lower the deer population is when they are killed by cars?
"That's right."
Nothing like a responsible local government.
