As if you needed more proof that the media knows absolutely nothing about firearms, the Bristol Press (CT) notes that their police department upgraded their sidearms to something bigger. A lot bigger.
The police department recently upgraded the fire power of the guns its officers carry, from 9 mm to 40 mm.For a photo of the 40 mm, click here.According to training Lt. Eric Osanitsch, the department made the move to upgrade to what he called a better ballistic weapon when the Glock 40 mm was chosen as the new department-issued service piece.
Prior to this change, Osanitsch said officers had been issued a Glock 9 mm but the department has a ten year replacement policy. When the time came to look at replacements, other options for service pieces were explored and the 40 mm seemed like the correct choice.
Osanitsch said some of the advantages of the 40 mm weaponinclude a heavier, faster bullet, a more controllable and accurate gun and the officers seem more comfortable shooting it.
It may seem like I'm nitpicking when I point out mistakes like this. But I think it is important to illustrate that these people know very little about the guns they want to ban. The media gleefully toes the gun control line and spout statistics given to them from gun grabbers. They don't just lack the will, but the ability to do any investigative journalism or fact-checking when it comes to guns. That they would influence public policy, when they don't have the slightest clue about basic firearm's knowledge is especially damning.

Damn, those cops mean business.
The only problem is that those will eventually be "on the street" and thugs will use them to rob banks and mug you on the subway.

Posted by: Acidman at February 8, 2005 3:16 PMWhat are the holsters going to cost?
Posted by: Steve Scudder at February 8, 2005 4:34 PMI've got one of those new Glock 40mm, it is a real sweet shooter except for the recoil. I live in CO and ended up somewhere in UT after firing it.
Posted by: Brass at February 8, 2005 5:29 PMThey lack the slightest clue about basic firearm knowledge? More like they lack a basic understanding of physical dimensions.
Posted by: Kyle Harr at February 8, 2005 7:23 PMDo those use "cop-killer" ammo?
And do they have a holster for concealed carry?
In non-related news, helath care costs for police officers has quadrupled due to an unexplained jump ion the number of lower back injuries. A blue ribbion committie has been formed to investigate.
Posted by: MMW at February 9, 2005 12:03 PMI was thinking of grenade launchers. Or maybe a huge sawed off shotgun. (12 guage is about 20mm, so what guage would be 40mm?)
But I don't think anyone has thick enough wrists to fire either of these like a pistol.
Posted by: markm at February 13, 2005 11:52 AMA 12 gauge is 19mm 10g is 20mm. A 40mm is about a 2.23 gauge, I.E. a 0.45 pound lead sphere would just fit in the barrel. Well, these coppers could be using M79's of vietnam fame, which use the 40x46mm cartredge, which is tiny when compared to the 40x304mm rimmed bofors. The Bofors will get upwards of 780m/s, wereas the 40mm grenade will get around 200m/s (subsonic). The M79 looks kinda like a big single barreled shotgun, and weighs about 6 1/2 lbs. Many police departments use them for tear gas launching and less-lethal projectiles. So the 40mm is in police service, but they tend to prefer 37mm launchers, probably so they cant fire all that Military HE.
