From James Taranto's Best of the Web on Tuesday:
"A Newark Airport security screener is being reassigned after officials said she failed to spot a 5-inch butcher knife in a passenger's pocketbook," the New York Post reports:Do women really do this?Katrina Bell, 27, of Greensboro, N.C., had cleared security and was waiting to board a flight with her sister on Saturday morning when she discovered she had forgotten to remove the knife from her bag. She had put it there--in preparation for a blind date Thursday night.Something tells us Katrina Bell is going to have a hard time finding another date.

Perhaps we have Lorena Bobbitt to thank for this?
Although creepy, something tells me that the media has dramatized the knife, much like they do with guns. 5" isn't very big, especially for a "butcher's knife".
My guess is that she had an ordinary kitchen utility knife. Again, a little creepy, but probably not as bad as they made it sound.
Then again, maybe I just can't deal with the possibility that women I've dated in the past were packing butcher's knives in their trendy purses.
Posted by: roger at February 17, 2005 7:44 AMI realize that, being a man, I may have a different perspective on this, but I'd carry something a lot more potent than a knife if I feared for my safety.

If I feared for my safety, I think I'd probably cancel the date.
Posted by: Ravenwood at February 17, 2005 10:11 AMMaybe she should get her blind dates lined up through someone else; what kind of a date does a person go on in which they think they may need to use deadly force? And how desparate IS this women for a date?

But for a woman of average strength, carrying a knife is nothing like being prepared for trouble. It should have been a gun.
