Door to door 'safety' checks in Australia

iconFor those of you who don't quite understand why many law-abiding gunowners will always oppose registration schemes, look to Australia where police are going door to door looking for violations.

A POLICE plan for door-to-door checks of every gun owner in the state has drawn flak from firearms groups.

The plan is being considered by the Chief Commissioner's office but gun groups believe police numbers are insufficient to cover the estimated 200,000 registered owners in Victoria.

Police said yesterday the focus would be on firearms storage.

Imagine this was for something else instead of guns. Would you support government agents knocking on your door to see if your home was properly baby-proofed? That drano under your sink could land you in jail.

This is the threat that Aussie gun owners face. One little misstep and they confiscate your firearms, take away your ownership privileges, and maybe even send you to jail.

Awesome. I wonder if the cops in Australia wear cool little armbands just below the shoulder with some nifty little insignia on it. A swastika would work nicely with their uniforms.

Someone once said, you get the kind of government you deserve. If people don't want this sort of thing happening, all they have to do is go out and start voting for different people; if they sit around and complain, they've lost. That's the only reason we still have firearms in this country; enough people get out and make enough difference. That is not to say we should not have more people out voting, just to keep the government curbed.
IMHO, of course.

And here I thought that all the sheep lived in New Zealand...

Robert,

Tyranny of the majority is still tyranny. If majority rule were enough justification, we could go back to the days of slavery and just say that if they didn't want to be slaves they should get out there and vote.

True, Steve, but nobody makes any worthwhile changes until you can get enough people who care to get out and make themselves heard; otherwise you are a silent majority/minority, and are unable to be counted. After all, how do you count someone, and respect them if you don't know they are there to be counted and respected?

Hmm, two hundred thousand search warrants? Or do Australians not require such?

Posted by: John Anderson at March 9, 2005 9:24 PM

Australian police do not require a search warrant to make this inspection. It is provided in the Firearms Acts of the various states; firstly that they can inspect; secondly that they do not need warrants to enter and search where they suspect firearms are being kept.

However, the experience of the NSW audit was that they courteously made an appointment, gave sufficient warning that if you didn't have the required safe storage you could get it before the inspection, and did not behave discourteously or indulge in extraneous searching or questioning activities.

This followed an incident a few years ago previous when a sergeant browbeat an owners wife for the key to the safe, and when she found it for him charged the owner with unsafe storage.

The police appear to be acting so as not to provoke any incidents, but the law is clearly excessive. We are subject to penalties far worse than murderers if we subvert these stupid, discriminatory laws.

And its all very well for you guys to kick back in your recliners with a beer and say we ought to resist. Every politician except about three in every state and federal parliament is voting for gun control laws however offensive. 90% of our population believe anti-gun bullshit. 90% to 100% of our media are anti-freedom, and all they need to say in this country to justify laws agansit guns is 'We don't want to go down the American path'.

Australians believe the most amazing rubbish about America if there are guns in the story.

In this climate, deo you expec t US to be suicide bombers for YOUR second amendment?

Posted by: ChrisPer at March 11, 2005 4:24 AM

Well, if you cannot change your government, you might consider moving. Perhaps you could get a free state project going in Australia.

Posted by: Ravenwood at March 11, 2005 6:17 AM

It's a sad fact that most of the Aussie population is in the cities- and just like in the US, city-dwellers don't know about guns, don't like guns, and don't care about those who DO like guns.

Combine that with the fact that both major political parties see eye-to-eye on this issue, and there's just nothing that gun loving Aussies can do about it.

Except, as was said above, move. Which is part of the reason I left Western Australia, tho I loved it there, to come back to the USA.

Part of my heart, though, will always be in Karragullen.
