If you have ever wondered why Apple continues to play second fiddle to competitors even when they have a superior product, here is part of the reason why.
As part of a "Made for iPod" logo program, Apple Computer has been angling for a slice of the revenue from the growing array of third-party add-ons that connect to the iPod, sources said.Royalties are one thing, but 10% is rediculous. For the right to display the logo, Apple was at one point looking to get 10 percent of an add-on's retail selling price. More recently, the company has been seeking 10 percent of wholesale pricing, according to people familiar with the situation.
Plus, their hardware is ridiculously overpriced. You can get a 60GB Zen MP3 player for under $300 at newegg.com. It may not be as small as an iPod, but Jesus. The cheapest regular iPod is $300 and 20GB -- 1/3rd of the size.
Then you can look at their computers (yes, they still make them) and compare them to anything from anyone else. Overpriced. Always.
Posted by: Adam Lawson at March 17, 2005 6:48 PMWell, Adam, your comfort level is lower than mine. When it comes to a luxury item like an MP3 player, I'm already paying $300 for it, so I'm going to get something with appeal. An iPod feels good, works easily and has a sense of quality to it. Ditto for a Mac PC -- and I did compare the one I bought to everything else. I could have gotten a $500 peice of crap -- but to get the same things that I wanted out of my $2000 Mac, I would have paid... $2000.
I've got an iPod. I've looked at Zens. Face it -- Zens suck.
