While I would still rather have a classic blue Shelby Cobra with those outrageous pipes down the side, the new Ford Shelby Mustang Cobra GT500 (what a mouthful) still makes me drool.
A 450-horsepower, supercharged 5.4 liter V-8 should push you to 60 miles per hour in the neighborhood of 4 seconds. And with a 6-speed manual tranny, you shouldn't have any trouble hitting 155 on the open road, er.. test track.
Of course the look of the car is enough to turn some heads, and sure to attract the attention of every policeman in your neighborhood.
Yeah, the only thing begging to be pulled over more than a red sports car is a red sports car with racing stripes. Stencil the word "Shelby" across the back and Barney Fife will have fantasies about pulling over Carol Shelby himself.
Throw in modern amenities like power everything, leather seats, and a 6 disk CD changer, and I'm ready to forget about the classic muscle cars and run out and buy one.
But then I've always had a soft spot for Mustangs.

My 1984 GT had more power than all the cars I'd owned to that point combined.
Come to think of it, more power than all the vehicles I have owned since combined, too.
Posted by: Brian J. at March 24, 2005 8:53 AMI had a '71 back in high school (about 10 years ago)...that was the most fun car I've ever owned (even more fun than the A4 Quattro).
Bright yellow, Black Vynil interior, no air, a CD player, and a 302 was just enough car to get me in plenty of trouble...damn I miss that car.
Better put in your order for one of these now: at $35k they'll sell every one they make and leave people still on the list. AT that price, you can get an Audi A4 (not an S4), BMW 3 series, the little Lexus (I think), Top of the line Z, Chrysler 300C, and a whole bunch of others hardly worth mentioning. Or a SVT Cobra in the new body style. Is there really a choice to be made?
Posted by: MMW at March 24, 2005 10:52 AMSorry, but mustangs just don't do it for me.
In high school - before I could drive - I used to catch a ride with a neighbor in his 1960's mustang - it was red and super sweat. Liked it a lot.
Since then, however, I've been anything but impressed with the ones I drove in.. I had heard good things about the new ones and actually rented one for a day a couple of months ago to test out (drove it up to Jersey for the day) and was anything but impressed. It felt sluggish and the handling was atrocious. I was really surprised at how poorly it performed.
Oh well, to each their own.
Posted by: countertop at March 24, 2005 11:14 AMFrom what I'm reading, this one might actually be made by the SVT team. They said it should be about the same price point, or slightly higher.
Then again, a buddy of mine bought a 1998 Cobra Convertible last year for a mere $13k. It needed a new tranny, but the engine was a brand new rebuild and had a 75k warranty on it. Geez for $13k I would have jumped on it too.
Apparently people are real skittish about paying for premium gas, I suppose.

Most rentals are a V6. They are peppy little cars, but don't really compare to the GTs.
And with 450 horses, I don't think that power will be a problem.
Posted by: Ravenwood at March 24, 2005 11:20 AMI've got a 67 Fastback in my garage, and a 428SCJ block & crank sitting on a pallet. This year I get to start buying all kinds of neat stuff for it.
But DAMN I wouldn't mind having that new GT500.
