If you're going to be homeless, Los Angeles sounds like the place to be. Not only is the weather nice, but the homeless enjoy amenities that some middle class families can't afford.
Opening Monday and trumpeted proudly by city officials is the Midnight Mission - and one of the nation's plushest homeless shelters. The $17 million state-of-the-art facility boasts a full-sized gymnasium, library, playroom, hair salon, education center, and professional kitchen. The shelter is the city's latest effort to address one of its most visible and resistant social problems: the more than 6,000 people who live on the streets.Of course this only treats the symptoms, not the disease. Homelessness in L.A. is on the rise, and the lack of affordable housing is largely to blame.

You aren't going commie-pinko on me, are you? What is this "lack of affordable housing" that you speak of? "Affordable housing" is generally a euphamism for "subsidized housing." You aren't advocating that, are you?

Posted by: Ravenwood at April 20, 2005 11:28 AMI gotta defend my town here, while LA may be pandering to the "homeless", Berkeley is downright disgraceful. In Berkeley, there are homeless newspapers, and many of them are proud to be homeless. I'm not saying all is well in LA, but we're certainly not the homeless Mecca it may seem.
Posted by: Pasty at April 20, 2005 2:11 PMYeah, but still, when you have to compare yourself to Berkeley to look normal....

Just as I suspected. LA has rent control.
Posted by: Bob at April 20, 2005 3:04 PMHomelessness comes from emptying mental hospitals.
Normal people don't roam homeless owing to housing costs. They move.
