I saw Star Wars last night and was pretty impressed. This is definitely the best film of the prequel trilogy and there's none of the cutesy cuddly bullshit that plagued Jedi, Menace, and Clones. The movie did seem to end rather abruptly though, and leave me wanting for more. But then I've always been a bigger fan of the Empire than of the goody-two-shoes Rebellion.
So now that this is at an end, where do Star Wars fans go from here? Lucas says that he's not going to make any more films, but we can always hope. There were rumors last year that Lucas would go back on his word and finish out the last three Episodes (7-9). But considering this one leaves off with Vader's rise to power, and A New Hope (the original) picks up some 16-17 years later with Luke coming of age, there is a pretty big time gap that *could* be filled. I think exploring more story lines within the Empire would be much more interesting than the post-Empire stories surrounding Leia and Han.
I also wouldn't mind seeing some of the 'alternative universe' books being put down on film. Grand Admiral Thrawn would make a serious ass-kicking villain. If Lucas doesn't do it himself, perhaps someone else can do it under license.
There was a lot of talk about the rise of the Empire mirroring American imperialism, but I don't see it. If you ask me, the peace-through-totalitarianism theme more closely resembled the modern anti-war movement's practice of looking the other way to Saddam's (and other dictator's) human right's atrocities. But then again, it's just a movie.
If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it. I might go see it again before it leaves the theaters.
I think, but am not certain, that the original Star Wars was the last movie I saw in an actual theater. I'm in the demographic that's not really into video, I guess. A friend recommended it for the faux western motif esp. the bar scene.
I saw a very funny cane toad documentary after that, but not in a theater, when the group at work rented it.
Yes, here it is on amazon now, Cane Toads, An Unnatural History (1987)
I wrote abit on this over at my own blog, but it was Very enjoyable movie..
there were parts that where not up to snuf but over all it was enjoyable.
Lucas cant write romance...
Oh Lucas! I love him. He's a real life super villain. And I mean Super, because I'm almost certainly going to see this movie.
Posted by: DaveJ at May 22, 2005 12:14 AMI've actually switched to the Dark Side now. The Emperor convinced me. I'm kinda in that position that communists are in -- I think he was right, but like Stalin, he's just the wrong guy for the job. The Jedi were planning to take over. They were unaccountable to the people and contemtious of them. The Empire was bad, but the Ivory Tower Jedi and feckless Republic were just as bad.
Posted by: Phelps at May 22, 2005 2:30 PMIncidentally, I watch "A new hope" later on the night after I saw "ROTS".
It was interesting to note that by that time, Vader was apparently relegated to third tier flunky, reporting to Grand Moff Tarkin.
Posted by: geekWithA.45 at May 22, 2005 6:15 PMHeheh. I thought I was the only one that did that. I actually started watching 'A New Hope' as soon as I got home that night, and finished it in the morning.
I also watched Empire on Saturday and Jedi on Sunday. It was interesting to note Leia talk about faint memories of her mother in Jedi.
Posted by: Ravenwood at May 22, 2005 6:49 PMher addoptive mom and dad musthave showed her some Holos.
Just got back from the uptown. My wife thinks its the best of the six, I think its excellent but not as good as star wars - maybe on par with the Empire.
I would like to see some movie exploring Han Solos history pre star wars
Posted by: countertop at May 22, 2005 10:37 PMI don't think Vader was serving under Tarkin in Ep IV. They were more or less equally serving under the Emperor. They are not really in the same chain of command. Tarkin would be the highest ranking military person, but Vader is the Emperor's Apprentice and a Sith Lord.
Posted by: Publius II at May 23, 2005 11:35 AMThere is a book trilogy on Han Solo already out. Pretty decent, though not up there with Zahn's Thrawn trilogy.
I'm inclined to think that the Thrawn trilogy would be best served by something on the order of an HBO miniseries...I think each of those books would take 4-6 hours to do justice to.
Posted by: Heartless Libertarian at May 24, 2005 9:20 AMI agree with the Ravenwood dude... that they should make a movie or something in between 3 and 4. I loved the 3rd movie and it brought together everything else...although some things are a little off. Personally I think that if they make a Star Wars mini series it would be great but I don't think Star Wars belongs on the tv until after it has been released in theaters! but then again this is just my opinion...(if you haven't seen the 3rd movie go and see it NOW!)
