California Democrats are hoping to increase spending on government education by $1.7 Billion. Where will they get the money? They'll soak the rich of course.
The Democratic spending plan calls for increasing the state income tax bracket on couples earning more than $285,000 from 9.3 percent to 10 percent and to 11 percent on couples earning more than $570,000. The tax hike would generate about $1.7 billion a year for education spending. If you go door to door and use a gun to extract money from people it's called armed robbery. But if politicians do it, it's called taxation."Above all else, Assembly Democrats believe that Californians deserve a budget that funds our schools and builds opportunity for our children," Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles, said. "That is why our budget is one that will provide our schools with far more resources for education than the one that the governor has proposed in his May (budget) revise."

They have to spend more money on schools. Only half of the kids parents pay tax, and the other half are illegal.
Posted by: Derek Hoskins at June 2, 2005 10:43 AMWhen will they figure out that the problem is not money, or lack thereof?
In Larry Elder's most recent book, he compares the LA school district with the schools run by the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Public schools spend over $12k per student. Catholic schools, around $2800. The Catholic schools have better test scores, a better graduation rate, and send more students on to college.
$12k per student per year. In a 30 student class, that's $360k a year. You could spend $100k to lease a building, pay the teacher $100k a year, and still have $160k left over to buy each student a damn nice computer, paper, pencils, and clothes to wear to school.
Can someone please tell me where all this money goes? Overpaid bureaucrats can't possibly suck it all up.
Posted by: Heartless Libertarian at June 2, 2005 11:06 AMCA should just do a benefit concert to solve all of its financial ills:
Bob Geldof announces plans and partial lineup for concerts aimed at ending global debt and world poverty.
Hey, if Bob can do that with some concerts...
Posted by: Steve Scudder at June 2, 2005 11:42 AMHaving recently escaped the compound known as California, I'd like to share another little tidbit about schools and finances...
All the schools are categorized as being in either "poor" or "not poor" areas. If the students in a "not poor" school have a fundraiser (for any reason, such as band or football uniforms, school trips, or whatever), they have to give 25% of what they raise to the state to be distributed to the "poor" schools.
It's just not fair otherwise since kids in the better economic areas have such an easier time raising money and all.
Funny how the progressives' idea of progress is to keep piling onto unpopular minorites.
