While I have no love lost for Wackovia (who is notoriously anti-gun), I have to snicker at their capitulation to the City of Chicago (who coincidentally is also notoriously anti-gun). In wanting to do business with Chicago, the North Carolina bank was forced to reveal that at some time, some where in their past they had something to do with slavery - a practice that was legal in the South at that time.
Wachovia was more than happy to play political-correctness kissy-face with Chicago and issue a heartfelt apology to Africans, Americans, and so-called African-Americans. What strikes me as so bizarre is how an apology for slavery, coming from people who never owned slaves, going to people who never were slaves, could be viewed as sincere (or even relevant). Never mind the ironies that many whites had a hand in ending slavery, while many blacks had a hand in brokering it.
And of course, slavery has always been illegal in Chicago (to the best of my knowledge), so I can only wonder what are the city's real motives. If I had to guess, I would say that they are some day hoping to extort money from these companies, many of whom (like JP Morgan) have already coughed up millions of dollars in indirect reparations.
I wonder still if Chicago will choose to do business with these companies. After all, wouldn't they be benefiting from a company that benefited from slavery? Will they choose to pay a higher price to deal with a "non-slave" company that would ordinarily have lost the bid?
Lucky for me, I've already been granted amnesty.
Ok I thought we had some whacky costs to business in England but paying some guys to rake your cooperate dirt has got to take to take the biscuit. And calling themselves the History Factory sounds as credible as antique maker.

Posted by: Kemper at June 5, 2005 7:12 PMFact: Wachovia Bank has a "no guns allowed" sign on the front door.
Fact: Wachovia Banks have suffered a string of bank robberies.
Fact: Bank robbers don't obey "no guns allowed" signs.
Posted by: Ravenwood at June 5, 2005 8:16 PMFact: in NC and Va the no guns sign is there ONLY to notify concealed weapons permit holders that they can not carry in the building. It is not an anti-gun statement anymore than the same sign that appears on the door of EVERY courthouse in NC and VA is an Anti-gun statement. Bank robber are not picking on Wacovia, they rob the nearest bank. EVERY Bank in NC and VA as well as every hospital has the no gun sign, it's for the concealted weapn holders!! figure it out this an't no conspirsy!

First, bank robbers are indeed targeting Wachovia banks and other banks with "No Guns" signs. I've been documenting it for years.
Second, not all banks have "No Guns" signs. In fact, most do not. In fact, Wachovia didn't have any "No Guns" signs at all until their merger with First Union.
Third, Courthouses ban guns because it is written into the statute. And yes, that policy is also anti-gun. Hospitals do not necessarily ban guns. At least the ones I've been to don't.
Fourth, enacting a policy to snare concealed handgun permit holders is as idiotic as it is anti-gun. People who take the time to get fingerprinted, take training, and have a background investigation run on them are not likely to run out and rob a bank.
