AOL is finally going to offer real high speed internet service. But it's going to be DSL.
To provide the one-stop shopping experience for high-speed Internet service, AOL is partnering with telecommunications wholesaler Covad Communications Group Inc., a California firm that leases phone lines from the regional phone companies, providing access to about 50 million homes. The new service will cost $29.95. Currently, AOL's Netscape dial-up is only $10, while premium AOL subscribers pay a whopping $24.AOL will handle all the branding, marketing and customer-service calls while Covad will provide the high-speed phone lines and modems.
Actually, I think it's the other way around. TW-C bought AOL.
I've heard rumors that TW is thinking about spinning off AOL. This may be in anticipation of that.
Posted by: Heartless Libertarian at June 3, 2005 8:32 AMActually AOL bought Time Warner. They then proceeded to run the business into the ground and alienate TW employees. (Asking them to switch to AOL mail instead from MS Exchange.)
After the honeymoon was over, some AOL management was fired, Time Warner started calling the shots, and there was talk of parting ways.
They started out as AOLTW, but more recently it has seemed like TWAOL. And you are correct that there is talk of spinning off AOL again.

AOL Netscape dial-up = $10
the Netzero dial-up I have at home = $0
Eventually I'd like DSL, but for now the Netzero has been reliable, reasonably fast, and despite being free is far better than the AOL dial-up I once had.
