It has long been my contention that the WMATA is trying to drive riders away. While I've cataloged the widespread incompetance of Washington's rail system, the bus system appears to be just as bad. The WMATA is in charge of both.
Metrobus, which carries 500,000 passengers a day across the region, is a dilapidated system that suffers from weak supervision, old equipment and buses that travel in bunches, wrecking schedules and service, a panel of bus experts told Metro directors yesterday.Thank God for bus experts.
At my house I have three different buses that will take me to a metro station (though, perhaps not surprisingly, none will take me to the nearest metro at West Falls Church) - the 24T, 23A and the 15K. They generally run ever half hour or so (though the 24T and 15K only run for 3 hours in the morning and early evening (ie: 4-6:30 - hardly rush hour for non federal employees). The problem is they all arrive (when on time) within about 2 minutes of each other meaning if I miss one I need to wait an additional half hour (or more). Seeing as I usually try to catch the 7:15-7:18 bus - it often times shows up early (sometimes 10 minutes early) because of the lack of traffic at that time and I miss it even if I get there early. The next series of buses, at 7:45-7:49, of course, still run early because I am located near the start of the line, but then invariably run late on the way to the metro because of increased traffic at that time, making me late for work.
Of course, sometimes the bus never comes at all (or perhaps its more than 10 minutes early or 30 minutes late) and once I had two 24T buses (the 7:15 and the 7:45) as well as a 15K bus show up in a line directly behind each other at 7:40.
The drivers are nice though, its the management thats f***ed up.
