Here is an update on last week's story about that 14-year old who was shot and killed while trying to commit an armed robbery. The press is excusing his actions and blaming the robbery victim, because the kid's rifle was unloaded.
The teenage boy fatally shot June 12 in Richmond's East End apparently was not as dangerous as he looked to the man who killed him.Gotta get me one of those 40mm handguns that the press keeps talking about. I bet it could down an airplane.Law enforcement sources involved in the case said Rodvon Daymetric Brown, 14, was carrying an unloaded, .22-caliber rifle when he got off his bicycle and approached a 47-year-old man sitting in his car at 24th Street and Fairmount Avenue around 11:40 p.m.
An ammunition magazine from an AK-47, also unloaded, had been duct-taped to the barrel of the rifle, giving it more of an appearance as a deadly assault weapon, the sources said.
The man inside the car, however, had a loaded, 40 mm semiautomatic handgun.
Richmond are consulting with prosecutors on whether to charge the man in connection with the shooting, which is still under investigation.The press hasn't yet said just how they expect the robbery victim to know the gun wasn't loaded. But they seem to reject the rules of basic firearms safety, which say that you should treat every gun as if it were loaded until you can prove otherwise.Police said the man who fired the fatal shots did not flee the scene, but called 911 and waited for police and medical attention to arrive.
Brown was a seventh-grader at Chandler Middle School who lived with his aunt and siblings in the 1400 block of North 23rd Street, just around the corner from where he was fatally wounded.
Family members had said the boy left the house that night to ride his bike because it had been so hot inside. A family spokeswoman had said Brown had never been arrested and was not known by his aunt to carry a weapon.
But last night, a law enforcement source said Brown did, in fact, have a record of arrests as a juvenile. The source did not provide details on the record.

Posted by: SayUncle at June 27, 2005 8:46 AMSo we should ban "aasault weapons" because they look scary. But if someone approaches you with a gun that looks like an "assault weapon", you shouldn't act as if you're in any danger, and should assume it's harmless.
I love lefty-logic.

Memo to all families if your teenage son limps out of the house, apparently unable to bend his leg it might NOT be due to boyish adolescent excitement, he might have a rifle concealed about his person.
Posted by: Chris at June 27, 2005 12:29 PMI wonder if as this little punk laid in a fast-forming pool of his own blood, seaping out of his newly aquired "40 mm" belly button, if he was had the Geto Boys' song "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangster" running through his head, or if he was considering the folly of trying to rob somebody with an unloaded .22 (or even a loaded .22 for that matter). Personally, if the little fucker had come up to me and threatened me with a sharp stick, I would have shot his ass dead and if I didn't live in a place like Florida where you're allowed to stand your ground, I would have left his ass there for the dogs to find. This guy might be in trouble because he did the right thing? Bullshit!

Such a "consultation" should take about one minute. It will be very interesting to see what happens here.
Add another "child killed by guns" to the Bradymeter and stoke up the VPC fires of damnation because an eeevil handgun has taken another precious little angel. *spit*

Posted by: Pasty at June 27, 2005 7:59 PMI think the age limit for long arms in Virginia is 12 years old. But if he had priors that were a felony (or could have been a felony had he been an adult) the kid was guilty of illegal gun possession at a minimum. (Not to mention brandishing.)

Ahh, that must be that compassionate conservatism I've heard so much about. Sigh. The kid fucked up, and his parents (or whoever was raising him) fucked up... Hot or not. I imagine that announcing that I was off for a midnight bike ride at 14 would have been greeting by laughter, followed by "Now get your ass back to bed", and I didn't live in the East End. Nevertheless, there's understanding that the gentleman had the right to defend himself against a percieved threat and the tragic consequences thereof for all parties involved, and glorying in someone's senseless death. It's hard enough being a responsible gun owner without people reinforcing the stereotypes of you as a bloodthristy vigilante just itching for a chance to waste a minority.
