Once again the media is clanging the bell of record high gas prices. The Ass. Press notes:
Gas prices have hit a record high of $2.33 a gallon, pushed up by the climbing cost of oil and strong demand in the midst of the summer vacation season, an industry analyst said Sunday. But then there's this:
The $2.33 mark remained well below the inflation-adjusted high $3.03 a gallon, in March 1981.Isn't it funny how every week we hear about record setting movie box office receipts, instead of the record high movie prices. (Popcorn tops $4 a barrel!) Of course, when adjusted for inflation, even the mighty Titanic is sunk by the venerable Star Wars.

When it comes to movies, I've long argued that they should report total numbers of tickets sold, rather than dollar values. The steep rise in ticket prices masks the true popularity of a movie.
Posted by: Andrew Upson at July 13, 2005 12:32 PMI've read that movie theaters have to charge so much money for consessions because the studios demand the vast majority of each ticket price. Literally, the consession stands are the only way a theater can make money.
I'm a DVD-kinda gal now.
