Congressional aides say that there are no plans to bring John Bolton's nomination as U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. back to the Senate floor before the summer recess, so President Bush may use a recess appointment. Of course, Reuters (and by extension the Washington Post, Boston Globe, etc) still refuses to use the f-word, and call a filibuster a filibuster.
In procedural votes in May and June, Democrats denied Republicans the 60 votes needed from the 100-member chamber to bring debate on Bolton to a close and move to a confirmation vote, which would require a simple majority.
It is frustrating. The Dems make it seem like the task of gathering 60 votes to 'end discussion' is part of the normal legislative process. I have to say they are doing a good job of normalizing the fillibuster.
Of course, in the internet age none of this will be forgotten. When the day comes that Republicans need to do the same (fillibuster) we will have the bloggers to remind the Dems of how normal they made obstructionism seem.
I read and posted resently that Bush is having a hard time even getting the Republican Senators to conform to his needs and agenda because the senators are already thinking about running for president.
So with the Fillibuster and the Crazy Politicians in the Senate it is no wonder Bush cannot get anything done!!!
