The city of Columbus (OH) is encouraging law-abiding citizens to register their so-called "assault weapons". Any gun with a detachable magazine and a pistol grip (or other mean and nasty features such as a forward grip or barrel shroud) will be banned after August 11. The PRO points out that the registration scheme and ban will have no impact on crime.
Of course, easy process or not, criminals still won't be registering their guns. Even the assistant city attorney who worked on the language for City Council, Josh Cox, admitted to the Columbus Dispatch in a story a few weeks ago that the ordinance will have no effect on criminals. The reason being, that requiring criminals to register their guns violates the Fifth Amendment. Since they are already debarred the use of arms, making them register is a form of self-incrimination and thus verboten in the United States.
Columbus' graphical representation (PDF) of just what makes an "assault weapon" shows just how silly and ineffective these laws really are. Note that none of the cosmetic features that are banned have any effect on the lethality of the gun or it's rate of fire.

Christ, I'm surprised they didn't include BIPOD on the list of baby-killing features.
Let me get this straight - pistol grips are bad, because they allow the weapon to be fired from the hip, indiscriminately into a crowd of people. And, forward hand grips are bad because they allow for the weapon to be held more steadily, making for more accurate shot placement.
I see.
They should just come out with language that bans any weapon capable of firing any kind of projectile in any manner whatsoever.
F***ERS!

Considering their idiotic reasoning for the current ban, you have to consider that this is ultimately what they have in mind.
It's all so Brady and VPC.
