Your tax dollars at work

The Town of Herndon (VA) voted to build a "day labor center", where illegal aliens can meet up with those wishing to employ unbonded, uninsured criminals. The town council voted 7 to 2 to build a shelter using Fairfax County funds, reports the Washington Post. They apparently feel that tax dollars are better off being paid to support those who don't pay taxes and shirk immigration and employment laws, than in the pockets of hard working American families.

Project Hope and Harmony, a social services agency, was seeking a permit to build and operate a worker center near the Loudoun County line. The approval means the town will help fund the center with $175,000 in public money...

As a condition of the permit granted to Project Hope, the nonprofit group must distribute information to contractors telling them that hiring undocumented immigrants is illegal. But Project Hope officials said they will not ask the laborers to disclose their status.

This should be welcomed by law enforcement agencies. All they need to do to catch illegals now is stake out the shelter. While they're at it, they can arrest contractors who employ illegal aliens undocumented human resources. Both are party to violating numerous laws, including shirking the overwhelming tax burden that Joe and Jane America face every day. Not to mention hampering our national security.

$175k?? What the hell are they building? We have three "day labor" centers in my home town (McKinney, TX). One is a parking lot with wooden bences under a couple of carports, the other two are gas stations.

Anybody who escapes taxes contributes to a rise in the standard of living as much as the tax-ensnared, so long as the labor is a voluntary transaction.

The standard of living goes up by the difference of what the job's worth to the buyer and what the job's worth to the seller. The gap between these values is the reason for the voluntary transaction happening.

If you tax it, existing gaps are smaller by the tax, and where the gap is smaller than the tax, the transaction no longer occurs.

The standard of living is smaller by the sum of all of those changes.

There's no reason to put potholes in all the roads just because some of the roads have potholes.

Yes, but you're over simplifying the argument. What they are doing is still illegal. I'm critical of the war on drugs, but I'm not about to suggest using taxpayer dollars to build them a crack house. And I have no sympathy for people who shirk their tax burden but still use social services that the rest of us tax payers are subsidizing.

What's more, it seems like contractors who would use illegal labor and avoid taxes are also more likely to avoid getting construction permits and building things to code. Yeah, it may be cheaper but I'm not so sure that's a good thing.

"$175k?? What the hell are they building?" Combine government corruption, construction unions, and various PC BS like "fair wages" and you might wind up paying $175K for a carport and a couple of benches. I once saw a small town pay $50,000 to get about twenty feet of curb fixed...

However, I suspect it's a heated building. Virginia winters do get rather nasty[1] occasionally, and they wouldn't want those illegals to catch pneumonia.

[1] That is, what Virginians consider rather nasty. As a Michigander who's also lived in Minneapolis, Warrenton, VA, Oklahoma, and Clovis, NM, I can say that Virginians have never seen "bad weather", but I still wouldn't want to wait for hours under a car port during one of their freezing rains.
