Ravenwood's Law is alive and well, and has possessed Hollywood film makers. One such victim is New Zealander Andrew Niccol, who wrote and directed Lord of War starring Nicolas Cage.
"The Wild West mentality is still strong in America," Niccol says, "especially if you go to a place like Texas, where it's alive and well, or maybe unwell: 'No one's taking away our guns.' In New Zealand, no one has a handgun, and they aren't saying, 'Gee, I wish I had one.' I hope the United States takes note that the murder rate is lower where gun availability is lower. It seems obvious to me."Well if it's that obvious it's not worth refuting. Texas also has more Alamos. Maybe that correlation has something to do with it too.
Meanwhile, gun control is working so well in Ireland, "experts" are recommending taking guns away from the military to cut down on suicide.
Interesting how all of these people from other countries are so "expert" on American psychology...
I wonder why they don't use Switzerland as an example?
Hence the tranquil land of milk and honey we call Washington, DC.
I find the murder rate to be at its lowest in areas with lower criminal population. But that's just my warped view of the world. I'm not an "expert".

Bloody New Zealand.
Posted by: DaveJ at September 13, 2005 10:54 PMNew Zealand is not all paradise. According to the National Party,
"New Zealand has one of the highest overall crime rates in the developed world, and too many criminals regard the present justice system with contempt with only 40% turning up to do a sentence of community service, with 86% re-offending within five years of being released from jail, with many criminals being in and out of jail 10 and 20 times."
"ew Zealands murder rate is lower than that of some other developed countries, and about the same as in the European Union. Some journalists have quoted statistics for rape which suggest that the New Zealand offending rate is much lower than in Australia, Canada and the US, although about double the average for major European countries. Such cross-country comparisons are hazardous because the definitions of sexual assaults vary widely across different countries. Whatever the true comparison is, we know our situation is not remotely satisfactory. For assaults, New Zealand is up in the same range as the US, Australia and Canada, and well above major European countries. "

I don't think guns are the answer to every problem nor do I think taking guns away will fix every problem. But I would much rather have guns than not have guns. I want to be able to protect myself.
Posted by: Suzi at September 14, 2005 1:45 PMHey, guns are the great equalizer. Besides, wearing a pistol makes you look thinner. Ladies, just ask any man, "Does this gun make me look fat?"
