Purity Of Essence

Bottled water is being blamed for cavities, and it's not what's in the water, but rather what's missing. Dentists claim that the lack of fluoridation of water is partly to blame for an increase in cavities. As more people are shunning tap water - which is heavily fluoridated - their teeth are paying the price.

The problem is that people are turning away from tap water - which for over two-thirds of Americans contains all of the fluoride that they need to prevent tooth decay - and most bottled waters don't have enough fluoride.

"If bottled water is your main source of drinking water, you could be missing the decay-preventive benefits of fluoride," the ADA says...

Part of the rise in bottled water is lack of trust in municipal water. In Canada, for instance, a mismanaged town water system in Walkerton, Ontario, was blamed for killing seven people and making 2,000 others ill in 2000.

So it's a choice between having your teeth fall out or ingesting life threatening waterborne bacteria. Would you like to be shot in the arm or the leg?

I brush my teeth with a floride-containing toothpaste. I also use a night-time floride rinse.

Perhaps the ADA should spend more time educating today's children in good tooth care rather than fussing about drinking non-floridated water.

Considering the fact that tap water flouride is not pharmacy grade flouride,(whch is better and safer for you,) the people who only use dental products for their flouride are much more intelligent than those who request it through municipalities.

Meanwhile, my special, prescription only, quad fluoride toothpaste that has less foaming agents (so you tend to avoid rinsing away the fluoride, so it has time to work on your teeth) is strictly prescription only. That's right, stick it in the water, whether or not people want it there, but hyper regulate the amount in toothpaste.

FDA crazy.

No, the people who have been drinking water for free out of the faucet or spicket their whole lives are by far the more intelligent people, Rhett.

I've never bought a bottle of water in my life, because:

a) It's all the same stuff bottled from a creek in New Jersey off Exit 131 in Bayonne (right by the last refinery before you get to the Bada-Bing club.

b) Bottled water is for pussies.

I work in Texas for a firm that designs water treatment plants. Here in Texas, we have some major exemptions from the FDA potable water standards the rest of the US enjoys, for instance: over 1,000 times the mineral salts allowed in other states, and over 10,000 times the allowable dissolved solids. The salts are the really bad-for-you stuff, which can't be seen. Next time you are in central Texas (Dallas, Austin, Waco, ...) get a glass of tap, let it sit overnight, and enjoy the snow scene at the bottom the next day! I eat drink and cook ONLY bottled water.

That's what's nice about rural Michigan. I've been drinking water straight from the well for 15 years. It beats the heck out of bottled water for taste, and it's got to be cleaner than city water drawn from a reservoir. (Deer defecate in reservoirs...) But it does leave me depending on my toothpaste and my dentist for flouride.

Of course, back when I was in the service, the water in Clovis, NM was nasty. This came from 1,000 foot wells, whether you were in the town, the air base, or visiting a local farmer. It had twice as much natural flouride as is good for you, and a whole lot of other minerals. Boil tap water, and you'd be scraping plaque out of the pan...
