With most of the New Orleans evacuees being people of color, the race pimps are concerned that too many of the Red Cross volunteers are people of pallor.
The Red Cross Shelter in Franklin opened its doors to storm victims last week. It's only one of two shelters in Middle Tennessee. The other is in Nashville. Both shelters are in suburban areas, and the volunteers are predominately white, while the evacuees are almost all black.
Some members of the African-American community say that's not good enough.
"When you're different and you're the lone person, you do feel different. When you're in crisis you like to have some familiarity there," says Joyce Searcy with the Bethlehem Centers of Nashville.

I'll just not say anything and save you from having to censor my comments, except to say that I have no doubt that seeing whites outdo blacks in being charitable is humiliating to blacks. It should be. But the lesson is just lost.
Posted by: mikem at September 21, 2005 6:29 AMI think this probably has to do more with geography than anything. The shelters are in predominately white neighborhoods, so it would stand to reason that the volunteers would be proportional to the area.
Posted by: Ravenwood at September 21, 2005 7:30 AMThat's not what the article says. It states that there are both black and white community groups that have offered to help, but that the white groups had already been "pre approved and trained" and the black groups had not. That indicates that the white community groups had long been prepared to help people, where as the black community groups didn't come forward until they saw that a large number of blacks were victims. That stinks of racism, of exactly the sort black leaders are laughably accusing their rescuers of, except of course the stink is on them, not whites.
Posted by: mikem at September 21, 2005 8:35 AMTheir forgetting that New Orleans has a black bald jackass for a mayor and he has proven himself to be incompetent
Posted by: screaming eagle at September 21, 2005 3:34 PMI guess we have to go out and draft a mandatory quota of volunteer workers. What will the S.C. say on that?
