Fundamental Rights

"This is inevitable. This is long overdue. This is a fundamental right." -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, on his plan to offer "free" wifi access to city residents.

That's right, the Mayor of the city that wants to ban pit bulls and handguns is calling wireless high speed internet access a "fundamental right".

Gavin just makes things up as he goes along. He is a hero in SanFran for ignoring state laws on marriage, why not just make up a new fundamental right?
The thing is, free wifi is a great idea if sustainable (I doubt it is.), but Gavin just has to put on a show by making ridiculous statements.

It's a great idea, unless you're in the business of selling wifi. You would think that with San Fran being near the heart of silicon valley... Well, let's just say it's like Idaho mandating free potatoes.

There are two problems with free Wifi (or any other government provided service):

1) Do you want an arm of the government to be able to find out what you are browsing on the web?

2) It will make it difficult or impossible for anyone else to provide the servce. Consider the public schools... So don't count on still being able to avoid problem #1 by paying for service.

I find it interesting that so many consider certain goodies to be rights--such as libraries and schools and now wi-fi--while dismissing property rights as a greedy privilege. No friends; life, liberty and property are rights, and a right is not bestowed by the majority, A right is held against the wishes of the majority and is non-negotiable. The goodies our politicians pretend to be giving us (they steal them) are the privileges.

What else would you expect from the Czar of the provincial capital of The People's Republic of California?

You won't be able to defend yourself, but you'll be able to get an instant video stream of your corpse being placed in the coroner's van.

Yeah, Philly too ! Initially it seems like a good idea, but give it some thought and Government controlling your access to the internet is just plain scary. I can pick up a telephone and call about 30 different ISP's and be hooked up within an hour. These will all disappear and then Big Brother decides when and if and how much it will cost you. The first time homeland security alert his 'High", they will shut down everyone's internet.

For a look at it from a slightly different viewpoint, check this out:

There may need to be some guidelines agreed upon by ISP providers and the government, though I do not like the idea of the government being responible for Web access; when you make someone responsible for something, you give them power over you.
