Sheriff Dan Beck from Lima (OH) got an ear full from the Mexican Consolate in Detroit. It seems Beck had instructed his officers to crack down on fraudulent ID cards, which the consolate took to mean racial profiling. But the lecture may have backfired, as Beck was defiant and thumbed his nose at the political correctness stupidity.
After receiving a letter from the Mexican consulate warning him about profiling Mexicans, Sheriff Dan Beck said Monday his agency may increase enforcement against illegal immigrants."If this is the type of attitude he wants, it appears he's trying to coerce me into doing noth-ing. It tells me this is a more important issue. He just raised the priority here," Beck said.
Beck was talking about a letter he received from Antonio Meza, the consul for the Mexican Consulate in Detroit. The letter was sent to Beck last month after Beck announced a plan to train his deputies on recognizing fraudulent forms of identification.
In the letter, Meza said he's been informed that Beck's agency is targeting Mexican nationals living and working in the area. He also said Beck's officers have gone as far as to ask Mexicans for their immigration papers as they wait to be picked up by their employers.
"I cannot see being an [illegal] immigrant and a day laborer as reasons to be profiled," Meza wrote.
Meza went on to say Mexicans come to the community to work and do not cause problems. His office has advised Mexicans to respect and cooperate with police, he said.
"However, if they begin to mistrust you and believe that you are not interested in solving crimes but acting as deputy of Immigrations agents, it will make everyone�s jobs more diffi-cult," Meza wrote in the letter.

Last I heard, being an illegal immigrant was a crime. It seems a lot of people are interested in that crime being ignored.

It is indeed harder for the police to investigate serious crimes (theft, assault, and murder) when witnesses and victims are afraid of being shipped back to Mexico - and when the case is solved, the prosecution is apt to disintegrate because the witnesses were deported. However, I don't see ignoring illegal immigration as a good solution to this. Too many real criminals hide among the great mass that are merely seeking jobs, and terrorists could use the same cover.
What I'd do is to legalize all immigrants with a clean record and then keep close track of them. To stay, they have to remain self-supporting, and show progress towards learning English and becoming citizens. Their kids born here aren't citizens by birth unless their parents earn their citizenship. They don't qualify for any government services except schools - and the schools don't spend extra to teach in any language besides English.
Then, anyone who can't follow even these rules and tries to sneak across the border is presumably a desperate criminal or a terrorist, and can be shot on sight.

That would require Amending the Constitution. Amendment XIV explicitly states that people born here are granted citizenship.
