Al Gore invented it, the U.S. controls it. But that could all change if the United Nations gets their way. They want the U.S. to give up control over the internet so that it can be run by committee, with the Sudan and China all getting a say in how it's run.
Old allies in world politics, representatives from the UK and US sat just feet away from each other, but all looked straight ahead as Hendon explained the EU had decided to end the US government's unilateral control of the internet and put in place a new body that would now run this revolutionary communications medium. [...]What's the U.N. going to do, implement sanctions? Send in inspectors? Maybe it's high time we evicted them from their ivory tower in lower Manhattan. It will be officially raised at a UN summit of world leaders next month and, faced with international consensus, there is little the US government can do but acquiesce.
"The EU had decided to end," hahahaha
"Little the US government can do," hahahaha
"The world's governments are expected to agree a deal to award themselves ultimate control," hahahaha
Sigh..... thanks for the morning chuckle Ravenwood!!
If the internet is just SO important to all of these other countries (yeah I am sure Cuba and the Sudan are major internet users), well, aren't they free to, well, make their OWN internet? I am not being facetious! There is Internet 2, for example - a separate network, distinct from what we know as "the internet." The EU and the UN could make their very own little internet and do whatever they want.
So why DON'T they??

Posted by: daltec at October 10, 2005 9:17 AMOh, damn, now the US internet will be cut off from the rest of the world, and I won't be able to use my cable modem to order chickens from a dusty street bazaar in Djakarta. Whatever shall I do?
Posted by: Tam at October 10, 2005 12:02 PMThe EU is just posturing to please China and the Islamacists.
The last thing they really want is to have Mullahs and China censor the internet ... although they would like to own it themselves.
If they implement their own root servers, they will be cut off from the US, the Commonwealth, and non-china asia. I expect they would knock it off in short order after implementing such a stupid move.
The Chinese and the third world can always leave the internet at any time ... DARPA and the US invented and own the beast ... if they don't like it, the door is right over there.
