Phil Taylor wonders if Notre Dame's decision to throw bags of money at Charlie Weis after only 7 games was motivated by race.
So why invest so heavily in Weis when you wouldn't do the same for [Tyrone] Willingham? Well, that gets us thinking thoughts that we don't want to think, thoughts about how Willingham's skin color is several shades darker than Weis'. Though it would be easy to cry racism -- and it's certainly likely that race is involved on some level -- it's not quite as simple as that. It's hard to accuse the administration of racist thinking when it was color-blind enough to hire Willingham in the first place.I don't know if Willingham's bar was set too high or not, but at the time I did think that firing him was a huge mistake.
The media consensus seems to be that Weis was considering returning to the pros, and Notre Dame wanted to secure him for the long term. Given that they seem willing to sell their soul for another national championship, this could turn out to be another huge (and expensive) mistake.

'Willing to sell their soul', 'hire the devil himself'. Nah, no intent to slur Catholic Notre Dame there.
From not understanding why a storied college football program would want to get rid of a 21-15 coach, to speculating that racism drives their hiring and contract practices, I have to wonder how Notre Dame became the target of your newly found political correctness. Oh wait, they're Catholic.
Maybe, just maybe, Notre Dame saw some promise in Weis after a few games that they finally were convinced did not exist after 36 games with Willingham (genuflect).
Now, Vrginia Tech, there's a team a racist can root for. From their victory cheer:
" You have seen the Hoyas Tumble,
You have made the indians cry"
Imagine that. Hokies take the Trail of Tears and turn it into a victory cheer for good ole white boy haven, Virginia Tech.
Mikem,
What have you been smoking this morning? Quit playing the Catholic Card. I'm not slurring Notre Dame because of their religion. I could care less. I'm slurring Notre Dame because they're Notre Dame and I hate them. They earn 5 extra spots in the polls just for being Notre Dame, and stole the Fiesta Bowl a few years ago where they got spanked by Oregon State.
And I distinctly intimated that I didn't think race had anything to do with their hiring/firing practices. Like I said, they would hire anyone they could to go back to the Gnute Rockne days.
And just what does the 1896 VPI victory cheer have to do with racism? Maybe it has something to do with VPI being a military academy, and the primary opponent of the military in 1896 being the Indians.
But then that was over 100 years ago, so I'm just guessing.
Posted by: Ravenwood at November 3, 2005 7:39 AMAs a Catholic guy, I didn't even realize I had a Card.
Sweet.
Posted by: roger at November 3, 2005 7:56 AMI'm sick of anti-Catholic snide remarks. Don't worry. I'm not picking on you. I often strike back at conservative/libertarian bloggers who think they can insult Catholics with impunity. Captain Ed is my favorite blogger to despise for doing the same, but in a more obvious manner.
My ancesters and family are Irish Catholic, so I defend them against their assigned role as the not so new Nazis, whom everyone gets a free shot at.
Would you employ racial stereotypes in attacking the 'hated' Howard University football team? Would you make 'Jewish' remarks about a predominately Jewish school's sports team? No, hell no. And for he good.
You're taking a shot at Notre Dame. I'm taking a shot at Virginia Tech and its 'storied' past. A little payback. You can always filter comments if you don't like getting it back.
Mikem,
I don't mind criticism, I just wish it was more constructive. Let me know what stereotype I used to offend Catholics. Was it just the 'soul selling' inference? I didn't know Catholics were the only ones capable of selling their souls, so please forgive me. Also what other metaphor should I use to imply someone is willing to do whatever it takes to return to glory? I just can't think of any good ones.
Also, can I make fun of Boston College, or is Notre Dame the only Catholic school to get special protection? Let me know whom I can impugn so I don't offend anyone's group identity.
Posted by: Ravenwood at November 3, 2005 8:33 AMFeel free to impugn anybody's sensibilities. It's your blog and as long as you permit angry responses, such as mine, then you are not a hypocrite.
And c'mon. Sell their souls, deal with the devil? How many watermelon and fried chicken remarks would a Howard University supporter have to see before they rightfully concluded that it wasn't just their football teams strategy or quality being addressed. (Of course, one could always point out that blacks are not the only Americans who like such food.)
Look, you publicize a charge of racism against Notre Dame because you "hate them". So, I look for any possible evidence of prejudice in your post and charge back. Do I think your are an outright anti-Catholic bigot? NO! But I think you employed snarky references to Catholic beliefs while posting a charge of racism.
Mikem,
Your attempt to play the Catholic 'Race' Card has failed. I am not anti-Catholic, nor is this post. Saying that someone is willing to sell their soul to get something is not a "snarky reference to Catholic beliefs".
It sounds like you have a bit of a chip on your shoulder.
Posted by: Ravenwood at November 3, 2005 9:27 AMFair enough. Your attempt to play the black race card against Notre Dame has failed.
And my chip, which I admitted to, is no worse than yours.
That was Phil Taylor who played the black race card. I distinctly took the position that ND was NOT racist. Hence my whole 'they'd hire anyone including the devil himself' argument... which got us going on the whole Catholic thing.
Not to rehash that whole thing, but it wouldn't make any sense at all if I had played the black race card. How could I think that ND would hire satan, but only if he's white? No, I think they'd hire anyone who would get them to the Rose Bowl. Maybe even me. Yikes.
