When I first saw the movie 'Panic Room', I thought the storyline was a big joke. The idea of having a fortress-like safe room in your home just seems dumb. But apparently panic rooms are becoming a big hit over in the U.K..
So far around 25 victims of domestic violence in Islington have had one of the re-inforced safe rooms fitted by security specialists. That's almost $5,000 USD, funded by U.K. taxpayers no doubt. An inexpensive shotgun, however, cost about $200 and would take about 1 or 2 days to learn how to use effectively. It also prevents recidivism. If they fear they are about to be assaulted by their partner or ex, they can flee to the room, lock themselves in and then call the police.
The rooms - which cost up to 2,800 each - are fitted with dedicated emergency phone lines connected direct to the police. The solid wooden doors are often strengthened by metal doors and also fireproofed to protect against arson attacks.
The idea comes from the United States, where panic rooms have become popular with the rich and famous since the September 11 terror attacks and because of increasing levels of gun crime.

There is no greater incentive for an intruder to leave than when he hears me work the action on my 870 super mag. That works for me, but....
Can a citizen in the UK own a shotgun?
And, would it still be $200?
Yes, Ravenwood, a 12 gauge is better - here.
Over there using lethal force - even justified - can get one life in prison, and they know it. So locking yourself into a little room probably is the better option for subjects of the Crown.

However, I'm thinking it'd include a cheap his-and-hers shotgun set in 12 and 20 gauge for the bedroom and a new safe and toys to put in it downstairs. I figure 400-500 for the upstairs shotguns (the wife would probably want a "cute" one), 1000 for the safe (I want a big one) and that leaves $3500 for toys to put in the "safe room." Mmm... toys... drool. /homer
It would definitely include at least one full stocked CZ. Man I want one of those.

They cost about $15K to build, if you do it right. And by right, I mean putting in its own air filtration system and other extras not seen in the movie.

That's what happens when you take away the right for individuals to protect themselves from those who choose not to follow the law.
It is sad indeed.

Posted by: DaveJ at November 5, 2005 1:24 AMRobert: That's just what I was about to say. It's just the at-home version of what's long been happening in the UK: criminals roaming the streets while honest people lock themselves in their homes. When that isn't sufficient, the good people build themselves prison cells to lock themselves into when the criminals break in...
