Registration leads to jail time

South Africa replaced one gun control act with another, and those that haven't yet renewed their gun licenses under the new law could face prison time. Nearly half-a-million gun owners could face 10 years in jail and a fine if they don't renew by the end of this month.

The registration isn't an easy process either:

In another new twist to the process, people who have given themselves as references in support of firearm licence renewal applications have to answer a barrage of questions from Designated Firearm Officers (DFO).

Setati said extensive interviews will have to be physically conducted with the two people listed as references by licensed firearm owners applying for renewals.

With close to 500,000 gun owners affected, that means nearly 1 Million face to face interviews that must be conducted in three weeks.

And just how will they know which people to go after for violating the new law? With the registry lists from the old one, of course.
