A high school English teacher in Vermont is coming under fire for using his classroom to express his personal political beliefs. Thirty-six year old Bret Chenkin says he isn't shy about sharing his political views with students. He claims that questions he put on a student quiz are being taken out of context.
One example: "I wish Bush would be (coherent, eschewed) for once during a speech, but there are theories that his everyday diction charms the below-average mind, hence insuring him Republican votes." "Coherent" is the right answer.Well, we can't all be as brilliant as high school English teachers.

"hence insuring him Republican votes"
Shouldn't that be "ensuring"?
But then I'm not an English teacher...

Posted by: Ravenwood at November 30, 2005 8:40 AMAhh, David, the bright light of truth shining through the gloomy woods of GODDAM IGNORANCE GODDAMMIT!!!
Thanks for pointing that out. MAN that sort of thing drives me nuts. Especially coming from some smarmy pinch-ass high school English teacher. Ensure vs insure, loose vs lose (now THAT one really gets my goat) and of course, the grand prize winner, the dreaded apostrophe. AHOY MATEY, I hear there be an S off the starboard bow!!! Spit on your hands, wi' a curse, run up the Apostrophe, and begin slitting throats! By the powers!
Because surely, there is no other reason to use an apostrophe, haha. Sorry to rant, and I am certainly not a "grammar nazi," but some of the stuff I see and hear is just so WRONG.
And as far as the teacher or AP making the error, well, who can say, but I still see all sorts of egregious errors all the time. Including odd words seemingly made up on the spot by some seriously dumb-ass journalists. A recent example: EXPERTNESS, hahahaha. As in, "so and so brings a new level of EXPERTNESS to the project," what a MAROON hahaha.
If you have not already done so, have some fun and take a look at Smith's "Junk English," Rheingold's "They Have a Word for It," and of course, www.engrish.com.
And now I gotta scoot, because there is not a moment to LOOSE hahahaha
