Because of the recent spate of global warming induced coldness, Prince George's County Police appeared on the news this morning to remind Marylanders that leaving your car running is illegal. Police Captain Kevin Davis warned citizens and residents that they would receive a written or verbal warning until Christmas. After Christmas, his officers will issue citations. ($55 plus 1 point)
"Not only is it unsafe to leave your keys in the vehicle while unattended, it's actually illegal in the state of Maryland...Prince George's County leads the region in stolen vehicles. The County has more stolen vehicles reported each year than the entire Commonwealth of Virginia. And since the state of Maryland, and Prince George's County in particular, has been so ineffective at combating car theft, they've criminalized everybody else....We want folks to be aware that the temporary comfort associated with getting into a warm vehicle is not worth the risk and inconveniences associated with getting your vehicle stolen."
I see the law makers in VA are about as bright as the ones I deal with here in MA...
Posted by: Derek at December 7, 2005 8:48 AMMore ways for the politicians to get more money by inacting rediculous state laws like this and what about the polical hacks themselves do they allow their limo engines to run while their chatting with others?
Posted by: sandpiper at December 7, 2005 9:42 AMDerrick: this is Maryland (MD) not Virginia.
snadpiper: the law exists, along with such nanny state crap such as headlights must be on during wiper blade use, and clear license cover prohibition because Maryland wants to be able to extract cash from every single car on the road, at will.
The law is being advertised and exercised in a futile attempt to stem the record amount of stolen cars in this county. What we need is real reform, such as go to jail and lose your license for 3 years or until you are 21 and shall issue carry laws for the carjacker car thief. Hell, reaffirm the right of owners to defend their property with deadly force. That will at least take a few of 'em out of the gene pool.
Instead, it's revenue enhancement and blame the victim, and pretend that gentrification in DC isn't driving the wrong element out of DC and into the last affordable suburb in the area.
Posted by: Standard Mischief at December 7, 2005 1:58 PMthey've criminalized everybody else.
And they start 'em young, too. Here in The People's Republic of California, a kid in my son's high school got in a bad off-campus accident during lunch. What do school officials do? They punish everyone by forbiding anyone from leaving campus during lunch time.
Dumb asses....
Posted by: The Other Mike S at December 7, 2005 4:20 PMThe politicians have made a state law based totaly on junk science and unreliable data i mean this is rediclous
Posted by: sandpiper at December 7, 2005 8:58 PMThe Denver, CO, area has the same law. "Puffers" get stolen on a pretty regular basis - including an undercover police car taken home one night last winter!
