Fifty-eight year old Patricia Konie from New Orleans filed a federal lawsuit over excessive force used by police during Hurricane Katrina. She's suing for injuries she sustained at the hands of police officers, for violation of her civil rights in forcing her to evacuate against her will, and for the unlawful confiscation of a firearm.
Konie was greeting a reporter and photographer from a San Francisco TV station and a journalist from the London Times when police unexpectedly entered her home. When she refused to leave as ordered, they confiscated a firearm used for defense and according to Konie, "slammed" her to the ground, both displacing and fracturing her left shoulder. After remaining in custody for several hours without charges being filed against her by authorities, she was flown alone to South Carolina where she remained for more than a month before returning to her native New Orleans.

Did anyone ever determine if the "officer" involved in that was LAPD or CHP? I know he wasn't a local.
And I'm damned glad she's suing, too.
Posted by: Kevin Baker at December 15, 2005 9:04 AMThe news report states it was CHP, and although I couldn't read the patch on the tackling officers shoulder, his partner's patch read "California Highway Patrol" and they were in identical uniforms.
The most telling item is the officers comment after the woman is tackled to the floor, Were just trying to help you maam.
What a joke.
The T.V. reporter's attitiude is rather infuriating...to paraphrase:
Here you had a woman with a gun. She elderly, she doesn't appear to be a threat, but a gun is a gun. Officers aren't kicking down doors, they are not dragging people from their homes, but in this case the woman had a gun. [emphasis mine]
I hope this woman and her attorney are successful in their suit.
