The WHO and CDC have thus far been unable to prove that secondhand smoke causes cancer. But that hasn't stopped the neo-temperance movement. I've said for years that smoke bans were coming for cars and other private property for the children. New Jersey is stepping up to the plate.
Assembly bill 4306 would allow police to issue an extra $250 ticket to a smoking motorist who is pulled over for a primary offense such as speeding. The bill has the heavyweight support of the Assembly's majority leader, Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen) and has been referred to the Assembly's Transportation Committee for consideration.Driver distraction was also listed as a reason, but drivers would not be given points on their license.

Is it illegal to smoke and drive there? WTF?
Posted by: mikem at December 16, 2005 4:11 AMProponents claim this is about highway safety. Bull. If that were true, similar fines would be levied on those who drink coffee, talk on cell phones, choke down burgers, and fumble around with music media.
Posted by: Brett at December 16, 2005 8:20 AMIf they are going to call it driver distraction, give the driver the points. But, like Brett, I think they need to add a few more things as well, to include yelling at your kids or even talking to passengers in the car--after all, a driver might be tempted to remove his/her hand(s) from the wheel to make a point or (heaven forbid!) turn to look at the person s/he is talking to for a moment; the next thing that should be added is yelling at fellow motorists--road rage, you know.
Posted by: Lornkanaga at December 16, 2005 10:04 AMIf you are smoking while driving, you definitely should stop until you've made sure that the fire in your clothes is out for good.
Oh wait, you meant cigarettes.
(Sorry, but I couldn't resist.)

Posted by: mikem at December 16, 2005 3:42 PMWill they ban cigarett lighters in cars now what will these political jerks to do stick their big noses into our lives?
Posted by: sandpiper at December 16, 2005 10:02 PMCars still have the lighter socket, but I don't think any of them still actually come with a lighter or an ashtray anymore. Maybe you can get that as an option.
